As our neighborhoods grow, housing becomes more and more of an issue. Jean will continue to work to make it easier for young families to get good mortgages they can afford, and to protect consumers from the bad banking practices that lead to the current recession.
In these tight times, bus services have been cut, and many projects don't seem to make it very far north. Jean will fight to make sure that the taxes our families pay go toward paying for roads, buses, and new alternative modes of transportation here, where our families can use them.
We have a nationally ranked cardiac unit, right in the heart of Everett, and several other very high quality hospitals, clinics, and care centers in the 38th District. Jean will work to maintain funding for these excellent institutions while working to help them expand capacity where our families need it most. Jean will work to put money into providing health care for needy families in our District.
Our District has an excellent resource in Everett Community College, which has partnerships with the State Universities and serves thousands of students from our neighborhoods. Jean has studied at EvCC and has served on the board of Trustees. Jean has fought for funding for EvCC, worked to preserve financial aid for students, and will continue to work toward bringing a world class four year experience to the young people in our county. The State Need Grant is a critical piece of Financial Aid that was almost cut entirely, but was saved from the chopping block. The upcoming Legislative Session will have deep cuts because of the projected deficit, but Jean will fight to protect our most needy students.
In the 38th Legislative District, and in Washington State, our families are hurting because of the Recession. Jean will continue to work to fund training for out of work employees and further training to help those still working increase their earning potential. She will also continue supporting the small businesses that make our economy work by supporting tax credits for small businesses to encourage them to build and hire new employees. Jean has also worked to strengthen the Credit Unions based in our communities by allowing those Credit Unions to accept public deposits.
Whether it is buying a home, a car, or even simply using a personal credit card to buy small items, our friends and neighbors are often offered deals that are too good to be true. When one particularly bad example was brought to Jean's attention, she went to work in Olympia to create tools for individuals to protect their own credit. Because of Jean's work, you now have better tools to control your own credit. She will continue fighting to protect consumers from attempts to take advantage of them, from protecting college students from predatory credit card companies to ensuring that senior citizens aren't taken advantage of when selling their homes.
